A single-wide service-module (SM) switching module for Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms. It adds 22 ports to the router: 16 x 1G RJ-45, 4 x 2.5G Multigigabit RJ-45 and 2 x 10G SFP+, where each SFP+ port takes either a 1G SFP or a 10G SFP+. Two internal 10G links connect the module to the router's forwarding plane, and Layer 2 traffic is switched locally on the module.
All 20 copper ports support PoE at 15.4 W and PoE+ at 30 W, and Cisco lists UPOE support on the copper ports. The module has no supply of its own: PoE comes from the router's PoE power supplies. As an example from Cisco's tables, a C8300-1N1S-6T or C8300-1N1S-4T2X with one 250 W PoE supply can run 16 PoE, 8 PoE+ or 4 UPOE ports in redundant mode.
It is Layer 2 only. Layer 3 services for switched traffic run on the host's switch virtual interface (SVI), which is software-processed, so throughput depends on the services applied. Features include 802.1X, 128-bit LAN MACsec, TrustSec SGT, LACP and PAgP, SPAN and RSPAN, 32,000 MAC addresses, 1,000 VLAN IDs and 9,216-byte jumbo frames. It runs on the router's IOS XE and supports setup through Catalyst SD-WAN Manager.
The double-wide sibling, the C-SM-40P8M2X, has 40 x 1G, 8 x 2.5G and 2 x 10G ports.
To confirm fit, check that the router has a free SM slot and enough PoE supply capacity for the planned endpoints.
