The external-antenna version of the Cisco Catalyst 9120AX, intended for challenging indoor spaces such as warehouses, factories and high-ceiling halls where the antenna pattern has to be chosen for the site. It is an 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) access point with 4x4 radios on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and a maximum PHY rate of 5.38 Gbps.
Antennas are sold separately. Cisco certifies the AP with antennas of up to 6 dBi gain on both bands. It also has a smart antenna connector; using RP-TNC antennas on it requires the AIR-CAB002-DART-R= cable. The operating range is -20°C to 50°C, wider than the 0 to 50°C of the internal-antenna C9120AXI. It weighs 3 lb (1.36 kg).
The uplink is a single RJ-45 port at 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps. Full operation needs 802.3at PoE+, Cisco UPOE or UPOE+, with a 25.5 W maximum draw; on 802.3af the radios drop to 1x1 or 2x2 and the uplink to 1G, and USB is disabled. It carries a BLE 5 radio and a USB 2.0 port, and is managed by Catalyst 9800 Series controllers or Cisco's earlier 3500, 5520 and 8540 controllers. The -E letter is the regulatory domain, which must be approved for the install country.
Lifecycle: Cisco moved the end-of-sale date for C9120AXE models up to July 10, 2026; the last date of support is December 31, 2031, and the named migration product is the Cisco Wireless 9174E. When replacing one, keep the existing antennas only if they are on Cisco's certified list for the new AP.
