Cisco's 40G BiDi optic lets a 40 Gigabit Ethernet link run over the same two-strand duplex multimode fiber used for 10G, instead of the 8-fiber MPO-12 trunks that QSFP-40G-SR4 needs. It does this with two 20 Gbps transmit and receive channels in the 832-918 nm wavelength range on each fiber, behind a duplex LC connector.
Cisco rates reach at 30 m on OM2, 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4 or OM5. For Ethernet links at 1E-12 bit error rate it has 0.7 dB of extra margin on OM3 that Cisco recommends allocating to connector loss, with links kept under 120 m. Power draw is up to 3.5 W, operating temperature is +10 to 70°C, the laser is Class 1M and the pull tab is gray. It complies with the QSFP MSA, so it works in Cisco 40G QSFP ports where Cisco lists support.
No end-of-sale notice for it appears on Cisco's transceiver EoL listing. Check the host platform in Cisco's Transceiver Module Group compatibility matrix before ordering.
