HPE 96W Smart Storage Battery with 145mm Cable for DL/ML/SL Gen9, 727258-B21

727258-B21 is the HPE 96W Smart Storage Battery with a 145mm cable for ProLiant DL, ML and SL Gen9 servers. PartSurfer lists two service spares for it, 750450-001 and 815983-001, both described the same way.

According to PartSurfer, one battery pack provides flash-backed write cache (FBWC) backup for all of the drive controllers in the server, and it connects to the system I/O board on a 145mm (5.7-inch) cable. HPE's Smart Storage Batteries QuickSpecs explains the job: the lithium-ion battery is a centralised backup source that is required to copy write-cache contents to flash on HPE Smart Array Gen9 and newer controllers if the server loses power unexpectedly. It is also the backup power source for HPE NVDIMMs. Only one battery is needed per server.

For Gen10 and later servers, HPE's current Smart Storage Batteries QuickSpecs lists the 96W P01366-B21 (145mm cable) and P01367-B21 (260mm cable) instead. Gen10 servers can also use the battery-free Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor, which cannot be combined with a battery in the same system. Cable length matters: confirm the 145mm cable reaches the connector in your chassis before ordering.
