749796-001 is the HPE service spare for the Smart Array P440ar, an Adaptive RAID On Chip (AROC) daughterboard controller for ProLiant Gen9 servers. PartSurfer describes it with two internal x4 mini-SAS ports, 2GB of embedded flash-backed write cache (FBWC) and 12Gb/s SAS transfer rates.
The controller does not include a battery, and the FBWC module cannot be ordered separately. Write-cache backup comes from the server's Smart Storage Battery: PartSurfer lists the 96W battery spare 815983-001 under the same option, and that battery's description covers all drive controllers in a Gen9 DL, ML or SL server.
PartSurfer lists the P440ar in 531 products. The largest groups are factory DL380 Gen9, ML350 Gen9, DL360 Gen9 and DL560 Gen9 servers. It also appears in StoreEasy 1650 and 1850 storage, StoreOnce 5100, 5250, 5500 and 6600 systems, and the D6020 enclosure.
Because the P440ar mounts in the dedicated AROC connector on the system board rather than a PCIe slot, it leaves the PCIe slots free. Before ordering, check that the server has the AROC connector and a working Smart Storage Battery; without the battery, the cache cannot be protected.
