A Cisco 10GBASE-ER SFP+ transceiver for single-mode fiber. It transmits at 1550 nm and supports links of up to 40 km on standard G.652 single-mode fiber. Cisco notes that links longer than 30 km count as engineered links under IEEE 802.3ae, so the fiber loss budget should be checked.
Short links need an attenuator. Cisco requires a 5 dB, 1550 nm fixed-loss attenuator when the link is shorter than 20 km and sells it as a spare, the 15216-ATT-LC-5=. Without it, the receiver can be overloaded on short runs. The minimum cable length is 2 m.
Optical figures from Cisco: transmit power -4.7 to 4.0 dBm and receive power -15.8 to -1 dBm. Power draw is 1.5 W and the operating range is the commercial 0 to 70°C. The module has a red colour code, which helps identify ER optics in a patch field.
Siblings: the SFP-10G-ER-S is the S-Class version with the same reach but no FCoE support, and the SFP-10G-ER-I is the industrial-temperature version that also supports 10GBASE-EW and OTU2/2e. For shorter single-mode links, the SFP-10G-LR covers 10 km without an attenuator.
Platform support is listed in Cisco's Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix.
To confirm fit, check the host and software release in that matrix, measure the link length, and order the attenuator if the run is under 20 km.
