  • Description
  • Specifications

An 8-port 100 Gigabit Ethernet line card for the Cisco ASR 9000 Series, in the packet transport optimized (TR) version. Cisco describes it as LAN/WAN/OTN capable and it uses CPAK optics, which are ordered separately. Each port runs at line rate without oversubscription, and with CPAK 10x10G-LR optics a single port can break out into ten 10GE ports, or ports can run in 40GE mode.

TR versus SE: Cisco offers each card as service edge optimized (SE), for deployments needing enhanced QoS, or packet transport optimized (TR), for networks where basic QoS is enough. The A9K-8X100GE-SE is the SE twin, and the A9K-4X100GE-SE and -TR are the 4-port versions. Different card types can be mixed in one chassis.

The data sheet lists compatibility with the ASR 9006, 9010, 9904, 9906, 9912 and 9922 (one section of the data sheet also lists the ASR 9910, another omits it), noting that older chassis may need cooling and power upgrades. The card runs Cisco IOS XR, supports online insertion and removal, operates from 5 to 40°C, and measures 14.5 x 1.63 x 22.02 in at about 28 lb.

Lifecycle: Cisco included it in its ASR 9000 3rd Generation end-of-sale notice. The last order date was April 30, 2023, software maintenance ends November 30, 2026, and the last date of support is April 30, 2028. Cisco names the A9K-8HG-FLEX-TR 5th-generation card as the migration product, and IOS XR 7.11.2 (64-bit) and 6.9.2 (32-bit) are the last supported releases. Before installing, check the chassis, fabric and IOS XR release against Cisco's ASR 9000 compatibility notes.
