The J9823A is the 5406R-44G-PoE+/2SFP+ v2 zl2 switch, a 4U modular chassis with 44 RJ-45 10/100/1000 ports that supply IEEE 802.3at PoE+, two open 10GbE SFP+ slots and four open module slots. No power supply is included. The chassis has two power-supply slots and needs at least one supply; the 700 W J9828A, 1100 W J9829A and 2750 W J9830B PoE+ zl2 supplies fit it, and different supply types can share one chassis, although each type takes its own power cord and full or N+1 redundancy works only with matching supplies.

A J9827A management module and a J9831A fan tray come in the box. Across all slots the chassis can reach 144 10/100/1000 ports, 144 SFP ports, 48 SFP+ ports, 48 Smart Rate multi-gigabit ports or 12 40GbE ports, or a mix. VSF fast software upgrade and IP SLA for voice work only with v3 modules in the slots.

Forwarding is up to 571.4 Mpps with 960 Gbps of routing and switching capacity, a 1015 Gbps switch fabric, a 64,000-entry MAC table and 10,000 IPv4 plus 5,000 IPv6 routes. Latency is below 2.8 µs at 1 Gbps, 1.8 µs at 10 Gbps and 1.5 µs at 40 Gbps. The chassis measures 17.5 x 17.75 x 6.9 in (44.45 x 45.09 x 17.53 cm), weighs 28.11 lb (12.75 kg) and runs at 0 to 45 C. Management is by CLI, web interface, AirWave, IMC and SNMP, with an RJ-45 out-of-band port and a serial or micro-USB console.
