The Power E850C server is a compact unit utilizing IBM POWER8 processor technology. It comes in a single enclosure configuration, designated by the machine type-model (8408-44E), and can be equipped with two, three, or four processor modules.
With a minimum configuration of two processor modules, only 7 out of the 11 internal PCIe slots are operational. Opting for three modules enables 9 functional PCIe slots, while choosing four modules provides access to all 11 slots. The server's processor and memory subsystem are integrated onto a single planar, housing four processor sockets and 32 memory Custom DIMM (CDIMM) slots.
The minimum supported system configuration comprises two processor modules and eight CDIMMs, with a rule stipulating a minimum of four CDIMMs per populated processor socket. The I/O subsystem consists of an IO planar, storage controller card, and storage backplane, with 10 general-purpose PCIe Gen3 slots on the IO planar, one of which is designated for LAN connectivity.
The storage controller card offers variations including high-performance dual controllers, dual controllers without write cache, and split disk backplane options. Additionally, up to 11 PCIe Gen3 slots are available within the system unit, depending on the number of processor modules installed.
Moreover, the Power E850C server boasts elastic Capacity on Demand for both cores and memory, IBM Active Memory Expansion, and Active Memory Mirroring for Hypervisor support. It is compatible with AIX and Linux operating systems, as well as PowerVM Standard and Enterprise editions.
The server is designed with strong reliability, availability, and serviceability features, including POWER8 chip capabilities, memory protection, multiple SAS storage protection options, hot plug SAS bays and PCIe slots, redundant and hot plug power supplies and cooling fans, redundant and spare internal cooling fans, hot plug Time of Day battery, and a highly resilient architecture for power regulators.
