HP 9000 rp3440 Parts and Upgrades

The HP 9000 rp3440 is a 2U PA-RISC server for HP-UX 11i v1, v2 and v3, sold as a base system to be configured. The A9952A (800 MHz) and A9953A (1 GHz) bases include the system board and one power supply; memory, disks and I/O cards were ordered separately, and a rack kit or pedestal mount was required. Each base carries one dual-core PA-8900 with 64 MB of shared L2 cache and only one core active. The second core needs activation AB473A (800 MHz) or AB474A (1 GHz), and it must be active before a second processor, AB534A (800 MHz) or AB535A (1 GHz), goes in. Speeds and processor types cannot be mixed, so a fully built rp3440 has two processors and four cores at one speed.

Memory is PC2100 ECC registered DDR266A in twelve slots, loaded in quads of equal DIMMs in the order marked on the system board: AB542A (1 GB), A9773A (2 GB), A9774A (4 GB), A9775A (8 GB) and AB561A (16 GB). The 32 GB maximum has one supported layout, two AB561A quads in the first eight slots with the last four left empty; a single 4 x 4 GB quad is not supported, and the next step down is 24 GB from twelve 2 GB DIMMs. HP-UX 11i v3 needs at least 2 GB.

Four PCI-X slots each have a dedicated 64-bit 133 MHz bus. Slot 1 has two I/O channels (1.0 GB/s) and should take the busiest card, and every slot is keyed 3.3 V, so 5 V cards are not supported. Three hot-plug low-profile Ultra320 disks run on the built-in dual-channel Ultra160 controller, two on channel A and one on channel B, and channel B’s external port cannot be used while its internal disk is connected. For internal RAID 1 on a PA-8900 system, HP adds a Smart Array 6404/256MB with two identical disks and the A9827A cables.

HP offered factory integration of processors, memory, disks, removable media and I/O cards, so most rp3440 systems run as a specific build. To match or replace one, describe it by base number, processor count and speed, active cores, memory quads and I/O cards. The QuickSpecs card list for that build is wide: Ultra320 SCSI (A7173A), 4Gb Fibre Channel (AB378B, AB379B), Smart Array 6402 and 6404, multi-port Gigabit Ethernet, and WAN adapters for X.25, Frame Relay and SDLC. A second hot-swap supply gives N+1 power, and HP cabinets hold up to 20 rp3440 servers in a 41U or 42U rack.
