The IBM 2078-92G is the FlashSystem 5100 High Density Expansion Enclosure. It is a 5U, 19-inch rack-mount unit that holds up to ninety-two SAS drives, which raises the density and capacity of the system well beyond what the 2U expansion enclosures reach. IBM pairs it with the 2077-92G, the same enclosure under machine type 2077.
It attaches to the FlashSystem 5100 control enclosures: the 2078-4F4 and 2078-4H4 (with their 2077 counterparts) and the 2078-UHB. For the FlashSystem 5100 model 4H4, IBM specifies the 92G as the 5U 92-drive expansion, alongside the 2U 12-drive 12G and 24-drive 24G enclosures, and these expansions support SAS flash drives and SAS hard disk drives.
The same 5U enclosure design, in its own machine types, is used with other FlashSystem and Storwize systems, so the model prefix matters when matching an enclosure to a controller: 2077-92G and 2078-92G go with the FlashSystem 5100, while the FlashSystem 7200 and 7300 use 2076-92G, 4664-92G and 4657-92G, and the FlashSystem 5200 uses 4662-92G.
IBM made the 2078-92G generally available on March 6, 2020 and withdrew it from marketing on April 12, 2022. IBM recommends the 4662-12G, 4662-24G and 4662-92G as replacements, and the transition to end of support services is dated December 31, 2026. A smaller SAS expansion for the Storwize V5000 family is the 2078-24E SFF expansion model.
