K2R82A: HPE MSA 2040 Energy Star LFF Chassis

K2R82A is the HPE MSA 2040 Energy Star LFF chassis: the controller-less 2U enclosure with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and room for one or two controllers. HPE's MSA 2040 QuickSpecs list it as the replacement for C8R12A, which was discontinued on July 31, 2015, and state that there are no physical, form, fit or function differences between the Energy Star SKUs and the earlier ones; only the SKU numbers and labels changed. That means a K2R82A can be used wherever a C8R12A chassis was specified.

The chassis is 3.5 in high, 17.6 in wide (19 in with ears) and 22.5 in deep, and weighs 31 lb without controllers. Because it ships empty, confirm which controller type the array runs before ordering: the MSA 2040 SAN controller (8Gb or 16Gb Fibre Channel, or 1GbE or 10GbE iSCSI, four host ports) or the MSA 2040 SAS controller (6Gb or 12Gb SAS, four host ports).

For capacity planning, HPE supports up to seven additional disk enclosures behind the array head, for a maximum of 96 LFF or 199 SFF drives. With 12TB LFF drives the QuickSpecs give 144 TB in the head alone and 1152 TB with seven LFF enclosures. PartSurfer lists the chassis ear kit as 717871-001 and the 595-watt power supply as 592267-002.
