Cisco lists the QSFP-40G-LR4 as a 40GBASE-LR4 module at 1310 nm for single-mode fiber with OTU3 data-rate support. It follows IEEE 802.3ba (-LR4), reaches 10 km over standard G.652 single-mode fiber and uses a duplex LC connector. Four wavelengths, 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm, carry the 40 Gigabit Ethernet signal, and the module multiplexes and demultiplexes them internally.
Per-lane transmit power is -7 to 2.3 dBm and receive power is -13.7 to 2.3 dBm. The laser is Class 1, power consumption is 3.5 W and the pull tab is blue. Cisco gives a commercial operating range of 0 to 70 C and a storage range of -40 to 85 C, and a minimum cable distance of 2 m. Only patch cords with PC or UPC polish are supported; APC is needed only on the QSFP-4X10G-LR-S.
The QSFP-40G-LR4-S is the closest sibling. It has the same 1310 nm, 10 km, LC, 3.5 W, blue-tab design, but supports the 40GBASE rate only, without OTU3, does not support FCoE and guarantees a bit error ratio of 1E-12 at 10 km. Pick the plain QSFP-40G-LR4 when OTU3 is needed. The QSFP-40G-ER4 reaches 40 km, and the WSP-Q40GLR4L (LR4-Lite) reaches 2 km.
More Cisco optics are on the Cisco modules page, such as the QSFP-100G-LR4-S 100G module, which also reaches 10 km over duplex LC.
