The DS2246 is a NetApp SAS-2 disk shelf that holds up to 24 drives and runs two IOM6 shelf modules. NetApp marks it end of availability, and its hardware support list drops the IOM6 6Gb/s SAS module, used in this shelf, the DS4246 and the DS4486, from ONTAP 9.16.1. Clusters that keep these shelves stay on ONTAP 9.15.1 or earlier; moving to 9.16.1 or later means migrating data to SAS-3 shelves such as the DS224C first.
It served as external storage for FAS and AFF systems, and NetApp's KB articles also cover it alongside the FAS2240-2 and FAS2552. Its IOM6 siblings, the DS4246 and DS4486, share the same module generation and the same ONTAP end date, and NetApp documents all of them in one installation and service guide with the DS4243.
NetApp's KB on whole-shelf failure notes that a shelf that loses power takes all its drives offline at once, so the way RAID groups spread across shelves, or SyncMirror, decides whether an aggregate survives.
Faults show in storage show fault, which lists the Shelf Type, Module Type and per-element status for fans, power supplies, temperature and voltage sensors. NetApp publishes a KB that maps those SES element numbers to physical positions on the shelf, and the front display panel is reported as its own module at the front left.
To confirm the model before buying spares, check that storage show fault reports the expected Shelf Type and Module Type IOM6, and check your ONTAP release first.
