IBM feature #5583 is a #5777 controller with auxiliary write cache for machine types 8202, 8205, 8412, 9117, 9119 and 9179. It provides a disk controller with auxiliary write cache to improve cache data redundancy. The feature includes a #5777 PCI-X Quad-Channel Ultra320 SCSI RAID adapter, CCIN 571E, and a secondary CCIN 574F auxiliary-write cache IOA with 1.5 GB of maximum compressed write cache. Feature #5583 does not require an IOP.

The #5777 and the auxiliary write cache IOA each require one PCI-X slot and must be installed together in the same system unit or I/O unit, drawer or tower. A provided SCSI cable connects the two, and it uses one of the four SCSI bus ports on the #5777, which reduces the number of SCSI buses that support disk drives from four to three. No disk drives are driven by the auxiliary write cache IOA. #5582 and #5583 are physically the same adapter cards; #5582 indicates that an IOP is used.

The #5777 adapter is 64-bit, 3.3 V and addresses up to 60 16-bit SCSI disk drives on four internal Ultra320 SCSI buses at up to 320 MB per second. It has up to 1.5 GB of compressed write cache and up to 1.6 GB of compressed read cache on a removable cache card with a concurrently maintainable battery. RAID 5 or RAID 6 is provided: RAID 5 needs a minimum of 3 drives, RAID 6 needs a minimum of 4, and the 574F auxiliary cache IOA is required for either level. The adapter pairs must both be IOPless.

On the 9117-MMA the maximum allowed is 144, and the feature needs IBM i 5.4 with V5R4M5 machine code or later. On the 9119-FHA the maximum allowed is 288 with an initial order maximum of 0, and it needs IBM i 5.4 with V5R4M5 machine code or IBM i 6.1 or later. It is orderable initially and as an MES, with CSU yes. The adapter is not allowed in the CEC enclosures.
