IBM System Storage DS4800 Storage Server Model 84A (1815-84A)

1815-84A is the IBM System Storage DS4800 model 84A, a compact 4U rack-mountable storage server with an Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz processor and dual, redundant 4 Gbps RAID controllers. It carries 8 GB of total cache, which is 4 GB per controller, where the 1815-80A and 1815-82A carry 4 GB in total and the 1815-88A carries 16 GB.

Each controller is assigned four 4 Gbps host-side connections, with four standard in total and the option of four more, and host connections support Fibre Channel switched, loop or direct attachment. Eight 4 Gbps drive-side connections form four dual-redundant drive channel pairs, which supports up to 16 EXP100 SATA enclosures, up to 16 EXP710 Fibre Channel enclosures or up to 14 EXP810 enclosures, each for a total of 224 disks. Fibre Channel and SATA drives can be intermixed behind one DS4800.

RAID 0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 are supported, with up to 512 host storage partitions and dual 10/100 Ethernet ports on each controller for out-of-band management. A lithium-ion battery protects the cache of each controller for at least 72 hours, and power supplies, fans and the midplane interconnect module are hot-swappable.

The 84A cache can be raised from 4 GB to 8 GB per controller with the DS4800 Model 84A/H Cache upgrade to 16 GB kit, which holds two controllers with 8 GB of cache each, part 39M5873. The enclosure is 174.50 mm high, 481.75 mm wide and 634.92 mm deep, weighs 36.38 kg, and draws 540 W per power supply at 100 V to 240 V.
