IBM feature #EM8L is the 256 GB (4X64 GB) CDIMM memory feature with 1600 MHz, 4 Gbit DDR3 DRAM for the IBM Power E870 and E880 (machine type 9119) and the Power E870C and E880C (machine type 9080). One #EM8L supplies four 64 GB CDIMMs. The 64 GB DDR3 CDIMM is CCIN 31EA, FRU 00VK197, a short form factor design built from 80 SDRAM chips with a filler that lets it latch into the tall CDIMM slot. The memory buffer on each CDIMM carries 16 MB of L4 cache built on eDRAM.
A feature code equals one memory quad of four CDIMMs. Each system node has 32 CDIMM slots, so a node takes at most eight memory features. Every installed processor needs at least one quad populated, and a processor can have only four or eight CDIMMs attached, all identical, while different CDIMM sizes can be mixed between processors.
All CDIMMs support capacity upgrade on demand, and at least 50 percent of the installed memory must be activated through memory activation features. The minimum installed memory on these servers is 256 GB, which needs 128 GB active. DDR3 and DDR4 CDIMMs can share one system as long as all memory within a system node is the same type, and DDR4 needs system firmware FW860.10 or later on the 9080 and 9119 servers.
