ST4000NM005A is the 4TB base model of the Seagate Exos 7E8 enterprise hard drive in the 512e SAS configuration. Exos 7E8 is built on 10th-generation conventional magnetic recording (CMR) and is aimed at large-scale data storage in data centers, scale-out file systems, backup and restore, and mainstream external storage arrays.
The drive spins at 7200 RPM with a 256 MB multisegmented cache, a 4.16 ms average latency and a maximum sustained transfer rate of 226 MB/s. It has two SAS ports at 12.0, 6.0 or 3.0 Gb/s, and bytes per sector can be 512, 520 or 528. Protection Information (T10 DIF), PowerChoice, PowerBalance and SuperParity are supported, and the drive has a humidity sensor and advanced write caching in internal NOR flash.
Seagate specifies the Exos 7E8 at a 2 million hour MTBF, a 0.44% annualized failure rate at full 24x7 operation, 550TB per year of workload and no more than 1 sector in 10E15 bits read as nonrecoverable read errors. Average idle power is 5.79 W and average operating power is 11.12 W, from +12 V and +5 V supplies.
The drive measures 26.1 mm high, 101.85 mm wide and 147.0 mm deep (1.028 x 4.010 x 5.787 in.) and weighs 649 g (1.43 lb). The same 4TB 512e SAS capacity is also made as ST4000NM011A with Seagate Secure and ST4000NM014A as a self-encrypting FIPS model.
