ST4000NM0043 is the self-encrypting (SED) 4TB model in the Seagate Constellation ES.3 SAS series. As a self-encrypting drive it is built to TCG storage standards for data at rest, with 16 independent data bands, authenticated firmware download and cryptographic erase of user data. The standard 4TB model without encryption is ST4000NM0023, and ST4000NM0063 adds FIPS 140-2 validation.
Ten heads serve a 3.5-inch drive that turns at 7200 RPM with 4.16 ms average latency. The 128MB data buffer supports a 128-command task set, and the integrated dual-port controller runs 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 Gb SAS at 600MB/s per port, or 1200MB/s with both ports. Sustained transfer is 83 to 175 MB/s, and the default logical block is 512 bytes with 520 and 528 selectable.
Peak density is 1,904,000 bits per inch on 305,000 tracks per inch, giving 578 Gb/in2, and the internal data rate is 2210 Mb/s. Maximum format time for 512-byte sectors is 917 minutes with verify and 455 minutes without. MTBF is 2,000,000 hours, equal to a 0.44% annualized failure rate, and the 4TB build weighs 700 g (1.543 lb). Encrypting and standard models perform alike.
