IBM feature #1604 is a pair of SAS flash RAID adapters and associated cabling for the High-Performance Flash Enclosure Gen2 (HPFE Gen2) of the DS8880 family. The SAS flash RAID adapter is the form factor installed directly into a PCIe3 x8 adapter slot in an I/O enclosure, and it connects HPFE Gen2 pairs nine to sixteen in the DS8888F model 988, which is the all-flash 533x machine type (5331, 5332, 5333 and 5334).
The flash RAID adapters have a PCIe Gen3 eight-lane connection to the I/O enclosures, which provides PCIe connectivity to the processor nodes. The main processor is a RAID engine that provides RAID and sparing management to the flash drives in the HPFE Gen2 flash enclosures, and each flash RAID adapter has four SAS ports that connect it to the HPFE Gen2 enclosures. The adapter is designed for connectivity and management of the HPFE Gen2 only.
The two adapters are installed as a pair, one in each of an I/O enclosure pair, which is known as a device adapter pair (DA pair). The logical configuration is balanced across the DA pair for load balancing and the highest throughput, and the redundant DA pair keeps data available if a flash RAID adapter or a logical I/O enclosure fails. Feature #1602 is the matching pair of HPFE Gen2 storage enclosures without flash RAID adapters, and each HPFE Gen2 enclosure is a 2U enclosure with 24 flash drive slots.
