IBM feature #EM8Q is a 32 GB CDIMM, 1600 MHz DDR4 DRAM memory feature for the IBM Power E850C (8408-44E) and the Power E850 (8408-E8E). One feature code provides one CDIMM.
The server holds DDR4 or DDR3 memory but not both, so choosing #EM8Q means every CDIMM in the system is DDR4. DDR4 delivers the same memory throughput as DDR3, and the DDR4 CDIMMs need the correct firmware level or the system does not start. Running DDR4 also calls for fully populated memory voltage regulator modules.
CDIMMs go in matching pairs, with at least four populated for each installed processor and at most eight per processor. A system with two processor modules has 16 memory slots, three modules have 24 and four have 32, which makes the largest configuration 4 TB with 128 GB CDIMMs. At least half of the installed memory must be activated. The other DDR4 sizes are 16 GB (#EM8P), 64 GB (#EM8R) and 128 GB (#EM8S).
