The IBM 7042-CR9 is a rack-mounted Hardware Management Console (HMC) for Power Systems. Its base configuration uses the 5463-AC1 server machine type. The HMC connects to one or more managed systems to provide administrators and service providers a console for the server hardware, to create and maintain partitioned environments, to detect, report and store hardware changes and to act as the service focal point. The HMC machine code is preinstalled on the disk drive, and the unit does not load other applications.

Major parts include one Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 processor (2.4 GHz, 15 MB cache, 85 W, 6-core, FRU 00AE690), a 16 GB 2Rx4 DDR4 2133 MHz RDIMM (46W0798), and a 550 W high-efficiency platinum AC power supply, available as 94Y8137, 94Y8139 or 94Y8173.

Storage is an eight-bay 2.5-inch media cage (00KF670) with hot-swap Near-Line SATA 7.2K drives of 500 GB (00AJ137) or 1 TB (00AJ142). A ServeRAID M5210 SAS/SATA controller (46C9111) handles virtual drives; the unit can run one drive or two, and a RAID 1 array can be rebuilt after a failed drive. An ultraslim enhanced SATA multi-burner (00FL353) is the optical drive.

The 7042-CR9 does not support external modems. It is serviced with the same publication as the 7042-CR7 and 7042-CR8.

IBM made the 7042-CR9 generally available on November 20, 2015 and withdrew it from marketing on April 24, 2018. The transition to end of support services was dated October 31, 2023, and IBM recommends the 7063-CR1 as the replacement.
