8231-E1D is the IBM Power 710 Express, a 2U rack-mount server with one POWER7+ processor socket for AIX, IBM i and Linux. The processor modules are 4-core at 3.6 GHz, 6-core at 4.2 GHz or 8-core at 4.2 GHz, each with 10 MB of L3 cache per core and 256 KB of L2 cache per core. The POWER7+ chip adds a hardware accelerator for Active Memory Expansion, which allows up to 125% memory expansion for AIX partitions.

Memory is DDR3 across a maximum of eight DIMM slots: four in the base configuration and four more with an optional memory riser card, for a maximum of 256 GB. There are five PCI Express Gen2 low-profile slots, and a PCIe x4 Gen2 low-profile slot holds the 4-port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet adapter included in the base configuration. The Integrated Virtual Ethernet adapter is not available on the Power 710.

Three storage backplane options exist: three SFF SAS drives or SSDs with a SATA DVD and a half-high tape drive; six SFF SAS drives or SSDs with a SATA DVD; or six SFF drives with a SATA DVD, Dual Write Cache RAID 5 or 6 and an external SAS port. The integrated SAS controller supports RAID 0, 1 and 10, and drives are hot-swap and front accessible.

The chassis is 440 mm wide, 706 mm deep and 89 mm high, and weighs 28.2 kg in the maximum configuration. Its larger sibling, the two-socket 8231-E2D Power 730, uses the same chassis dimensions.
