GLC-EX-SMD is the Cisco 1000BASE-EX SFP transceiver with digital optical monitoring (DOM), built for long single-mode links of up to 40 km (131,234 ft). It transmits at a nominal 1310 nm, with a transmit and receive window of 1290 to 1335 nm, over standard G.652 single-mode fiber only, and it terminates in dual LC/PC connectors. APC patch cords are not supported.
Transmit power is +3 to -1 dBm and receive power is +1 to -22 dBm, with a maximum channel insertion loss of 18 dB. On a back-to-back link, a 5 dB inline optical attenuator is required between the fiber cable and the receiving port at each end. The SMD module carries the extended temperature rating of -5 to 85 C.
Compared with the 1000BASE-LX/LH module GLC-LH-SMD, the GLC-EX-SMD trades multimode support for reach. The GLC-LH-SMD runs 10 km on single-mode and 550 m on multimode with -3 to -9.5 dBm transmit power and a 6 dB loss budget, while the GLC-EX-SMD works on single-mode fiber only.
