HPE MR408i-o Gen11 x8 Lanes 4GB Cache OCP SPDM Storage Controller (P58335-B21)

The HPE MR408i-o Gen11 is a Broadcom MegaRAID-based storage controller in the OCP NIC 3.0 form factor, so it installs in the server's OCP slot rather than a standard PCIe slot. It connects to the host over PCIe Gen 4.0 x8 and to the drive backplane through one x8 LP SlimSAS port.

It runs up to 8 drives (12 Gb/s SAS, 6 Gb/s SATA or 16 Gb/s NVMe, hard drives or SSDs) with up to 64 volumes and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Mixed mode lets some drives run in RAID volumes while others pass through as HBA devices. Cache is 4GB of flash-backed write cache (72-bit DDR4-2666) with read-ahead and write-back caching.

SPDM (the DMTF Security Protocol and Data Model) lets HPE iLO 6 authenticate the controller by certificate. HPE pairs it with hardware root of trust, secure boot and attestation, and self-encrypting drive support.

Write-back cache needs a separate energy pack: P01366-B21 (96W Li-ion battery, 145mm cable), P01367-B21 (96W, 260mm cable), or hybrid capacitors P02377-B21 (145mm) and P02381-B21 (260mm). The kit ships with the controller and a backup power cable.

Nearest siblings: the MR416i-o (P47781-B21) doubles it to 16 drives, two LP SlimSAS ports, x16 storage lanes and 8GB cache in the same OCP form factor; the MR416i-p (P47777-B21) is the half-height PCIe plug-in card with 16 drives and 8GB.

To confirm fit, check that your Gen11 server's QuickSpecs lists the MR408i-o, that a storage-capable OCP slot is free, and that the drive cage needs no more than 8 lanes.
