IBM feature #ESB9 is a 2.5-inch (SFF) Enterprise SAS solid state drive with 387 GB capacity, formatted with 4k (4224) byte sectors, for IBM i. The drive is supported in SFF-3 SAS bays of the IBM Power System S814 server, machine type 8286. It is rated at 10 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) over a 5-year period.
#ESB8 and #ESB9 are physically identical drives with the same CCIN of 5B13. The different feature codes help the IBM configuration tools understand how the SSD is used: #ESB8 indicates AIX, Linux or VIOS, and #ESB9 indicates IBM i.
Because of the carrier/tray, the SSD only fits in POWER8/POWER9 system unit SAS bays (SFF-3). It does not fit in EXP24SX drawers (SFF-2), in #5802/#5803 I/O drawers (SFF-1) or in POWER7 system unit bays (SFF-1). The 4k drives cannot be reformatted to 5xx drives, or the other way round. It needs one SFF-3 SAS bay and a PCIe3 SAS controller.
The IBM i levels required are 7.2 TR7 or later, 7.3 TR3 or later, and 7.4 or later. No #ESB9 drive is required, and up to 18 can be ordered as an MES; the initial order maximum is 0. Customer setup (CSU) is yes, and there are no return parts on an MES.
