The Dell EMC PowerSwitch S3048-ON is a 1RU 1000BASE-T top-of-rack switch with 48 line-rate ports that run at 10 Mb, 100 Mb or 1 Gb, four line-rate 10GbE SFP+ ports and an RJ45 console and management port with RS232 signaling. Every SFP+ port can act as an uplink to the spine or core, as a stack port that joins up to six units into one logical device, or as a mix of the two.
Switch fabric capacity is 260 Gbps full duplex and forwarding capacity is 131 Mpps, with line-rate Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing for IPv4 and IPv6. Latency is 3.7 µs on 1000BASE-T and about 1.8 µs on SFP+. The S3048-ON holds up to 80K MAC addresses, 16K IPv4 routes and 8K IPv6 routes (shared CAM space), 4K Layer 2 VLANs, 64 MSTP instances and 64 VRF-lite instances, with 8 queues per port, 4 MB of packet buffer memory, 2 GB of CPU memory and an MTU of 12,000 bytes.
The S3048-ON is built for open networking. Dell EMC Networking OS9 and Dell EMC SmartFabric OS10 are the Dell software choices, and ONIE supports zero-touch installation of a third-party operating system. Layer 3 features include OSPF, BGP and policy-based routing, VRF-lite for tenant isolation, and Virtual Link Trunking with Routed VLT and VLT Proxy Gateway. Automation covers a puppet agent, REST API extensions, OpenFlow 1.3 and the Embedded Open Automation Framework.
The base unit has one AC power supply (90-264 VAC, 50/60 Hz) and three fans, with a second hot-swappable power supply and hot-swappable fans available for redundancy. Airflow runs either I/O panel to PSU or PSU to I/O panel, and the direction cannot be changed in the field. Maximum power consumption is 87 W, typical consumption is 65 W and maximum thermal output is 290 BTU/h. The chassis is 1.71 in high, 17.09 in wide and 12.6 in deep (4.4 x 43.4 x 32.0 cm) and weighs 12.8 lb (5.84 kg) with one power supply.
SFP+ ports take 10GbE SR, LR, LRM, ER and ZR transceivers plus copper twinax and active optical cables, and SFP modules cover 100BASE-FX, 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX and 1000BASE-ZX.
