BB874A is HPE's StoreEver LTO-7 Ultrium 15000 external tape drive, a half-height LTO-7 drive in a desktop enclosure. PartSurfer lists the service spare as 839698-001. It describes the drive as a half-height external LTO-7 drive with a 6Gb SAS interface, 15 TB compressed capacity per cartridge, up to 300 MB/s per drive and WORM support.
The 15 TB figure assumes HPE's 2.5:1 compression. HPE's MSL3040 reference guide gives LTO-7 capacity as 240 TB native per 40-slot module, or 6 TB native per cartridge. It gives the LTO-7 drive a native data-rate-matching range of 101 to 300 MB/s, which lets the drive slow its tape speed to match a slower host.
For media, the same guide states that the LTO standard up to generation seven writes one generation back and reads two generations back. An LTO-7 drive therefore writes LTO-6 and LTO-7 cartridges and reads LTO-5 as well. LTO-7 Type M (9 TB) formatting is an LTO-8 drive feature, not an LTO-7 one. WORM cartridges are needed for write-once retention.
As an external SAS drive, it connects to a SAS HBA in the server through an external SAS cable; check the HBA's external port type and the backup software's support list before buying. HPE's StoreEver tools, Library and Tape Tools (L&TT), handle drive firmware updates and diagnostics. If you need more capacity per tape, LTO-8 and LTO-9 drives are the newer generations, but they cannot read LTO-6 or older media.
