3588-F9C is the IBM LTO Ultrium 9 tape drive, known as the TS1090, in its multi-mode Fibre Channel version for the TS4500 tape library. IBM made it generally available on 10 September 2021. It attaches at 8 Gbps Fibre Channel and installs in the TS4500 in a compact drive sled, and the library needs firmware 1.8.0.0-C00 or higher for LTO-9.
Native data rate is up to 400 MBps, with a compressed rate of up to 700 MBps, compared with 360 MBps native for LTO-8. A cartridge holds 18 TB native, or 45 TB at 2.5:1 compression. The drive reads and writes LTO-9 and LTO-8 cartridges, with LTO-8 media at 12 TB, and it cannot read earlier LTO generations.
The drive has a 1024 MB internal data buffer, 32 KB cartridge memory with Ultrium 9 media, application-managed and library-managed encryption, Open Recommended Access Order and partitioning for IBM Storage Archive file-level access. It includes a temperature and humidity sensor, and power draw is 37 W maximum in operation and 18 W idle. The LTO-8 drive in the same TS4500 family is 3588-F8C, the TS1080.
