K2R79A: HPE MSA 2040 Energy Star SAN Dual Controller LFF Storage

K2R79A is the pre-configured MSA 2040 Energy Star SAN array in the LFF chassis: a large form factor array chassis with two MSA 2040 SAN controllers, and no drives or SFP transceivers. HPE lists the chassis as the 2U12 6Gb MSA 2040 unit, spare 717869-001, which accepts one or two SAN or SAS controllers and holds twelve 3.5-inch drives; the SAN controller spare is 717870-001.

Energy Star certification is the only difference from its predecessor. K2R79A replaced the earlier SKU C8R14A, and HPE says no physical changes were made beyond SKU numbering and labels: there are no form, fit or function differences, and no new qualification or testing is needed to use or substitute the Energy Star SKUs.

The SAN controller supports 8Gb/16Gb Fibre Channel and 1GbE/10GbE iSCSI with four host ports per controller. Each controller takes two or four SFPs, which are ordered separately. HPE's MSA 2040 gives 6 GB of cache per controller, 12 GB per array.

HPE's 2017 end-of-life notice lists K2R79A with a discontinuance date of 31 January 2018 and names the MSA 2050 SAN DC LFF array, Q1J00A, as the replacement. Spares include the 595-watt AC power supply 592267-002, the 6Gb I/O module 717873-001 and the 16Gb and 8Gb short-wave FC SFPs 717874-001 and 717875-001.
