3592-J70 is the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70. It is the control unit that lets 3592 tape drives connect to IBM FICON and ESCON host channels, and it belongs to the 3592 family of enterprise tape products used for file archival, backup and restore, sequential application data and off-site disaster recovery storage.
The 3592 Model E05, E06 and EU6 tape drives connect only to the TS1120 (C06) Controller or to the 3592 Model J70. The older 3592 Model J1A can attach to the J70, to a C06 or to a 3590 Model A60. When E06 and EU6 drives are connected to IBM tape controllers they must be configured as encryption-enabled. Drives can also reach the controller through Fibre Channel switches, and the J70 supports attachment of Fibre Channel 3590 Model B, E and H drives.
The J70 is housed in a 3952 F05 frame or a standalone rack. After installation there are no accessible operator controls or displays, and all controller displays and controls are for IBM service representatives only. The rear panel has a display that reads OK in standby mode and a Power ON/OFF button; start-up can take as long as eight minutes after the button is pressed, and a hold of about two seconds returns the controller to standby.
The 3592 Model J70 is not supported in the TS3500 Tape Library. It is supported with the 3494 Enterprise Tape Library, the 3590 A14 drive frame and standalone racks. Drive models that attach to it are the 3592-E05 TS1120 tape drive and the 3592-E06 TS1130 tape drive.
