The IBM 3580-H9S is the TS2290 Tape Drive, the stand-alone half-height LTO Ultrium 9 drive. It succeeds the TS2280 LTO-8 drive and has a 12 Gb SAS interface, where the half-height LTO-8 and earlier drives use 6 Gb SAS. IBM made the 3580-H9S generally available on December 3, 2021.
An LTO-9 cartridge holds 18 TB native and 45 TB compressed. The drive writes LTO-9 media and also handles LTO-8 cartridges. LTO-9 media go through a one-time media optimization on first load, which builds a calibration reference for that cartridge so that any LTO-9 drive can then use it; the first load is best done where the drive will be deployed, in a stable environment.
The drive reports itself to the host as ULT3580-HH9. Nominal load-to-ready time is 16 seconds for an initialized cartridge and 40 to 132 minutes for an uninitialized one during optimization. Nominal unload time is 56 seconds. The drive supports host application managed encryption with T10 methods and WORM cartridges.
The half-height LTO-9 drive, 3580-HH9, is also used in the TS2900 autoloader and the TS4300 library; for the TS4300 the FRU is 02XX411 for SAS and 02XX413 for Fibre Channel.
The earlier generation of this stand-alone drive is the 3580-H8S TS2280 LTO-8 drive.
