- Specifications
A compact 1RU router from the Cisco ASR 1000 Series, used at the enterprise WAN and internet edge and for service-provider aggregation. The route processor, embedded services processor (ESP) and SPA interface processor are integrated in the one chassis.
Built-in ports are 6 x 1GE SFP and 2 x 10GE SFP+; Cisco notes that the built-in 10G ports cannot be run at 1G speed. Expansion is one SPA slot and one network interface module (NIM) slot. Forwarding is 2.5 Gbps by default and can be raised by software licence to 5, 10 or 20 Gbps, with crypto throughput of up to 8 Gbps. It ships with 8 GB of DRAM shared by the RP, ESP and SIP, and weighs 25 lb fully loaded.
Throughput is licence-based, and Cisco sold 2.5G, 5G, 10G and 20G bundles as separate PIDs, so check which bandwidth licence a used unit carries before relying on its rated speed.
Lifecycle: Cisco announced end of sale on January 31, 2022. The last order date was August 1, 2022, software maintenance ended on August 1, 2023, and the last date of support is July 31, 2027. Cisco names the Catalyst C8500L-8S4X (4 x 10GE SFP+, 8 x 1GE SFP) as its replacement. The spare chassis PID is ASR1001-X=.
Sibling: the ASR1001-HX is the higher-capacity 1RU model, rated up to 60 Gbps with 16 Gbps of crypto, but Cisco lists no SPA slot on it.
