ST9600205SS is the 600GB standard model of Seagate's Savvio 10K.5 SAS family: a 2.5-inch, 10,000 rpm hard drive with a dual-port 6 Gb/s SAS interface (1.5 and 3 Gb/s compatible). Seagate's product manual lists four heads for the 600GB models and a 64 MB data buffer.
Rated performance is 3.0 ms average rotational latency, 3.6 ms average read access including controller overhead, and 93 to 168 MB/s sustained transfer. The drive supports 512, 520, 524 or 528-byte logical blocks, which matters for arrays that format drives with larger sectors. Seagate gives an AFR of 0.44% and an MTBF of 2 million hours. Typical idle power is 3.82 W at 6 Gb, the operating case temperature range is 5 to 55 C, and the drive weighs 215 g.
The same capacity exists in two security versions with different numbers: ST9600105SS is the Self-Encrypting Drive model and ST9600005SS is the FIPS 140-2 Level 2 model. Standard Savvio 10K.5 siblings are ST9900805SS (900GB), ST9450405SS (450GB) and ST9300605SS (300GB). Seagate notes no significant performance difference between SED and standard models.
Server and storage makers ship this drive in their own carriers under their own part numbers. Dell, for example, lists it as R72NV (firmware CS0C) in its PowerVault MD34XX/38XX support matrix. For a replacement, match the SAS interface, capacity and any encryption requirement to the existing drives, and check that the carrier fits the bay.
