Cisco C9404R Catalyst 9400 Series 4-Slot Chassis

The C9404R is the smallest chassis in the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series of modular campus switches. It has four slots: slots 2 and 3 are reserved for supervisor engines and slots 1 and 4 for line cards, so a fully loaded chassis carries two supervisors in 1+1 redundancy and two line cards. It is a 6RU chassis measuring 10.47 x 17.30 x 16.30 in, weighs 39.0 lb with the fan tray, and has one fan-tray bay and four power supply bays for 3200 W AC, 2100 W AC or 3200 W DC supplies.

Slot bandwidth depends on the supervisor. Cisco lists 80 Gbps per slot with the C9400-SUP-1, 240 Gbps with the SUP-1XL, SUP-1XL-Y or C9400X-SUP-2, and 480 Gbps with the C9400X-SUP-2XL. Maximum PoE per slot is 4,320 W, and the chassis supports up to 96 Gigabit copper ports, including 90 W 802.3bt ports. Cisco lists an MTBF of 2,077,070 hours.

The C9407R (seven slots, five for line cards) and C9410R (ten slots, eight for line cards) use the same supervisors and line cards, so modules move between the three.

Lifecycle: the chassis itself is not on a Cisco end-of-sale notice, but the C9400-SUP-1 and SUP-1XL supervisors reached end of sale on April 30, 2025, with support ending April 30, 2030; Cisco names the C9400X-SUP-2 and SUP-2XL as their replacements. When buying a used chassis, check which supervisors, supplies and fan tray are included, since the supervisor sets the per-slot bandwidth and software support.
