IBM feature #EM8R is a 64 GB CDIMM, 1600 MHz DDR4 DRAM for the IBM Power E850C (machine type 8408, model 44E) and the Power E850 (8408-E8E). Each feature code provides a single CDIMM, and the CDIMMs must be ordered and installed in matching pairs of the same feature, with both CDIMMs of a pair in slots that serve one processor. The same family has a 16 GB (#EM8P), a 32 GB (#EM8Q) and a 128 GB (#EM8S) DDR4 CDIMM, and pairs of different sizes can be mixed on the same processor.
At least four CDIMM slots must be populated for each installed processor module, and each processor supports at most eight CDIMMs. A system with two processor modules has 16 CDIMM slots, three modules have 24 and four modules have 32, so the Power E850C holds up to 4 TB with 128 GB CDIMMs. DDR4 provides the same memory throughput as DDR3, and the DDR4 memory has L4 cache. DDR4 and DDR3 memory cannot be mixed in a system, and if a DDR4 feature is used, all of the memory in the system must be DDR4.
All CDIMMs are capable of Capacity on Demand and must have at least 50% of their physical capacity activated, with a minimum of 128 GB activated per system. The DDR4 modules must be at the correct firmware level or the system does not start, and running DDR4 needs fully populated memory voltage regulator modules.
