SFP-10G-AOC3M is Cisco's 3 meter 10GBASE active optical cable with SFP+ ends. An active optical cable is one assembly: the optics are built into the cable ends, so there is no separate transceiver to buy and no fibre to patch. The 3 m length covers links inside a rack or between neighbouring racks.
Power draw is 1 W. The temperature class is commercial, 0 to 70 C (32 to 158 F). The SFP+ family is built to IEEE 802.3 and the SFP+ MSA specification SFF-8431, which also covers active optical and passive twinax cables. Not every device with SFP+ ports supports every module, so the host port has to support this cable.
The same cable comes in other lengths: SFP-10G-AOC1M, SFP-10G-AOC2M, SFP-10G-AOC5M, SFP-10G-AOC7M and SFP-10G-AOC10M. Pick the length by the measured path between ports, since the cable cannot be shortened or extended.
For a 10G optic that uses separate fibre, see the SFP-10G-ER; more are in the Cisco modules range.
