The Dell PowerEdge R720 server, 225-2133, is a 2U rack server with two sockets for Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors, the Intel C600 series chipset and 24 DDR3 DIMM slots. LRDIMMs are supported alongside registered DIMMs, and the E5-2600 v2 processors raise memory speed to 1866 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel.

Drive bays are hot-plug and sit behind an optional bezel. The chassis options are up to sixteen 2.5-inch drives, eight 2.5-inch drives, eight plus eight 2.5-inch drives with dual RAID controllers, eight 2.5-inch drives plus four 2.5-inch Express Flash PCIe SSDs, or up to eight 3.5-inch drives. Internal controller choices are PERC S110 software RAID, which supports up to four SATA drives and is for the R720 only, and PERC H310, H710 and H710P; PERC H810 is the external option. The R720 can run two internal RAID controllers, and the chassis cannot be reconfigured after it is built.

Six PCIe slots are standard: one x16 full-length full-height, three x8 full-length full-height and three x8 half-length low-profile, with an optional extra x16 full-length full-height slot for up to seven expansion cards. The R720 can hold up to four optional internal GPUs, either two 300 W double-wide or four 150 W single-wide cards, with a GPU enablement kit and a 30 degrees C limit on inlet air. A slimline SATA DVD-ROM or DVD+/-RW drive is optional.

Power supplies are hot-plug and redundant: 495 W, 750 W or 1100 W AC, or 1100 W DC. Remote management is iDRAC7 with Lifecycle Controller, Express as standard and Enterprise as an upgrade, and the front panel has an interactive LCD, two USB connectors, a video connector and a vFlash card slot. The empty 2.5-inch chassis weighs 11.7 kg, and the loaded chassis reaches 29.5 kg with 2.5-inch drives or 29.2 kg with 3.5-inch drives.
