PER640 is the code Dell uses in its documentation for the PowerEdge R640 (its technical specifications are published as per640_ts_pub). The R640 is a 1U two-socket rack server from Dell's 14th generation, supporting the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor family with up to three UPI links at 11.2 GT/s. Memory is 24 DDR4 slots at up to 2933 MT/s, taking RDIMM, LRDIMM, NVDIMM or Intel persistent memory (DCPMM), with up to 1.53 TB of RDIMM or 3 TB of LRDIMM.
Drive options are 10 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA/NVMe (up to 8 NVMe), 10 x 2.5-inch NVMe, 8 x 2.5-inch, or 4 x 3.5-inch SAS/SATA. Dell lists the PERC S140 software RAID, H330, H730, H730P and H740P controllers, the HBA330, and a 12 Gb/s SAS HBA for external storage. There are up to three PCIe Gen3 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot and a rack network daughter card (rNDC) slot, with embedded networking of 4 x 1 GbE, 2 x 10 GbE + 2 x 1 GbE, 4 x 10 GbE or 2 x 25 GbE. Accelerator support is up to three single-width NVIDIA T4 GPUs or one FPGA.
Its successor, the R650, moves to DDR4-3200, PERC 11 controllers and OCP 3.0 networking, so rNDC cards and H740P controllers from an R640 do not move across.
When buying a used R640, check the drive-bay layout, the PERC fitted and the power supplies (495 W and 750 W Platinum options among others) against your workload.
