The Network Essentials version of Cisco's Catalyst IE3400 PoE base switch: 8 Gigabit Ethernet PoE/PoE+ copper ports and 2 Gigabit SFP uplinks in a fanless, DIN-rail chassis for industrial and extended-enterprise sites. Cisco states that the -E suffix means Network Essentials and the -A suffix Network Advantage, and the IE3400-NW-A perpetual licence upgrades an -E unit.

Network Essentials covers Layer 2 switching, REP, MRP and Device Level Ring resiliency, Parallel Redundancy Protocol on ports Gi1/1-1/4, QoS, NetFlow and MACsec-128. Routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP and EIGRP, VRF-lite, MACsec-256 and SGT/SGACL are Network Advantage features, so a network that needs them should buy the -A model or the upgrade.

The base PoE budget is 240 W, rising to 480 W across 24 ports with a PoE expansion module; IEM-3400-8P works only with IE3400 PoE bases. IEM-3300 modules also fit, but Cisco notes they prevent SGT/SGACL on the IE3400 base. Power is redundant DC input from 9.6 to 60 VDC, with 54 VDC needed for PoE+, and switch consumption is 47 W excluding PoE. It runs IOS XE with 4 GB DRAM and supports IOx edge applications.

Cisco rates it -40 to +75°C in a fan- or blower-cooled enclosure, IP30, with a 15.2 x 11.2 x 13.5 cm chassis weighing 2.3 kg and a 401,313-hour MTBF. Compared with the IE-3300-8P2S-E, it adds the 480 W expansion budget and PRP. Pair it with a 54 VDC supply such as PWR-IE240W-PCAC-L for PoE+.
