Cisco Catalyst IE-3400-8P2S-A Rugged PoE+ Switch

Cisco describes the Catalyst IE3400 Rugged Series as its advanced modular industrial switch line. This model has 8 Gigabit Ethernet PoE/PoE+ copper ports and 2 Gigabit SFP uplinks, and the -A suffix means it ships with the Network Advantage licence. Cisco lists Network Advantage features including OSPF, BGP, IS-IS and EIGRP routing, VRF-lite, MACsec-256 and PIM multicast routing, on top of the Network Essentials set.

The base PoE budget is 240 W, rising to 480 W shared across 24 ports with a PoE expansion module. It accepts IEM-3400-8P, which works only with IE3400 PoE bases, as well as IEM-3300 PoE and non-PoE modules, for up to 26 Gigabit ports. Cisco notes that fitting an IEM-3300 module stops SGT/SGACL working on the IE3400 base, so use IEM-3400 modules where that feature is needed. Power is redundant dual DC input from 9.6 to 60 VDC; PoE needs 48 VDC and PoE+ 54 VDC. Switch consumption is 47 W excluding PoE.

Features that set the IE3400 apart from the IE3300 include Parallel Redundancy Protocol on ports Gi1/1-1/4, SGT/SGACL security and Device Level Ring, alongside REP and MRP. It runs IOS XE with 4 GB DRAM, supports IOx edge applications, and is rated -40 to +75°C in a fan- or blower-cooled enclosure (+70°C vented, +60°C sealed), IP30. The chassis is 15.2 x 11.2 x 13.5 cm and weighs 2.3 kg, with an MTBF of 401,313 hours.

The IE-3400-8P2S-E is the same hardware with Network Essentials; Cisco sells an IE3400-NW-A perpetual upgrade. When replacing a unit, compare the PID and licence on the label, and pair it with a 54 VDC supply such as PWR-IE240W-PCAC-L for PoE+.
