The M640 is the Dell PowerEdge M640, a half-height blade server for the PowerEdge M1000e enclosure. It takes one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores each, and the supported options run from the 8-core Gold 6244 up to the 28-core Platinum 8276 and 8276M, which allow 2933 MT/s memory.

Sixteen DDR4 slots (up to six channels, one or two DIMMs per channel) accept registered ECC RDIMMs and LRDIMMs of 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB at 2933, 2667 or 2400 MT/s. Maximum memory is 1 TB.

Two 2.5-inch drive bays hold 10,000 and 15,000 rpm SAS drives, 7,200 rpm enterprise SATA drives or SSDs, including NVMe drives. RAID choices are the S140 software RAID for SATA and NVMe, the H330, and the H730P with 2 GB of cache. A BOSS card at the front carries up to two M.2 SATA devices, and an IDSDM module takes microSD cards of 16, 32 or 64 GB.

Network and fabric connections use one x8 PCIe Gen3 slot for the bNDC card, two x8 Gen3 mezzanine slots and one x8 Gen3 miniPERC slot, all wired to processor 1, plus a x2 Gen3 slot for the BOSS RAID card on processor 2. bNDC cards come as 1 GbE quad-port or 10 GbE dual- or quad-port. Management is iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller, a front USB 3.0 port and a micro USB 2.0 iDRAC Direct port.

The blade is 50.35 mm high, 197.9 mm wide and 544.32 mm deep with the handle closed. Video is an integrated VGA in the iDRAC, sharing 4 Gb of DDR4 with the iDRAC application memory.
