The MX7000 is the Dell PowerEdge MX7000, a 7U modular enclosure that holds eight single-width or four double-width compute sleds, with double-width sleds in slots 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. The MX740c and MX750c are full-height, single-width, two-socket sleds for it. The chassis does not accept 13G, FX2 or M1000e sleds. Storage sleds such as the MX5016s use the same front slots, up to seven per enclosure, and reach the compute sleds through Fabric C.

Up to six front-loading 3000 W Platinum power supplies (AC, or DC at -48 V to -60 V) plug into the main distribution board, and the minimum is two. Six C22 inlets sit at the rear, and an AC cord needs a C20 to C21 connection. Redundancy modes are none, grid and PSU, with PSUs filled in the order 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 6 for grid redundancy.

Cooling is four 60 mm front fan modules (3+1 redundancy) and five 80 mm rear fan modules (4+1 redundancy), all hot-swappable and populated in full. Gen 2 fans are required, and Gen 1 and Gen 2 fans are not mixed in one chassis.

The rear has three plus three I/O slots. Fabrics A1/A2 and B1/B2 are direct-orthogonal Ethernet connections to the sleds, with MX9116n and MX7116n modules for A/B, while Fabric C1/C2 is a midplane-based interconnect for Fibre Channel or SAS. One or two MX9002m management modules provide dual 1000BASE-T uplinks, a micro-USB serial port and integrated KVM, and the management fabric runs at 1 Gb/s.

The enclosure is 307.4 mm high, 482 mm wide and 811.6 mm deep, and weighs 82 kg empty and up to 182 kg fully populated. A static rail kit is used and two-post racks are not supported. The right control panel has a power button, two USB Type-A ports, one Micro-AB USB port and a mini DisplayPort, and the left panel comes as an LCD with Quick Sync, an LCD without it, or LED indicators only.
