The R540 is the Dell PowerEdge R540, a two-socket 2U rack server for virtualization, video streaming, web serving, data analytics and mail and messaging. It runs Intel Xeon Scalable processors on the Intel C620 series chipset. A single processor must sit in socket 1, because the system does not boot with only socket 2 filled, and with one processor only the right riser is functional.

Sixteen DDR4 slots (six channels per processor, two DIMMs per channel) take RDIMMs of 8, 16 or 32 GB and 64 GB LRDIMMs at 1.2 V. Memory runs at 2666, 2400, 2133 or 1866 MT/s depending on the DIMM type and population.

Two chassis are available: an eight-drive chassis, and a twelve-drive chassis with up to two extra rear 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives. Bays hold 3.5-inch hot-swap HDDs, or 2.5-inch SSDs and HDDs in a hybrid carrier that fits the 3.5-inch bay, for up to 14 drives in the largest layout. Controllers range from the S140 software RAID (SATA only) to H330, H730P, H740P, H350 and H750 PERC cards, plus HBA and external SAS options. A BOSS card holds up to two 6 Gbps M.2 SATA drives for the operating system, and an IDSDM/vFlash module takes 16, 32 or 64 GB microSD cards.

Up to five PCIe 3.0 slots sit beside a dedicated PERC slot and a LOM riser slot, with LOM, right, left and butterfly risers available. Two 1 GbE LOM ports are built in, and the LOM riser adds two 1 GbE, two 10 GbE or two 10 GbE SFP+ ports. Power comes from two hot-plug 495 W, 750 W or 1100 W supplies, or a single 450 W cabled supply. Management is iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller, iDRAC Direct on a Micro-AB USB port and the optional Quick Sync 2 wireless module.

The chassis is 86.8 mm high, 434 mm wide and 703.76 mm deep without the bezel. A fully loaded 12 x 3.5-inch system weighs up to 29.68 kg and an 8 x 3.5-inch system up to 25.4 kg.

The earlier PowerEdge R530 used Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, 12 DIMM slots and iDRAC8. The R540 moves to Xeon Scalable, 16 DIMM slots and iDRAC9, and adds the BOSS M.2 module.
