HWIC-16A is a Cisco high-speed WAN interface card with sixteen asynchronous EIA-232 ports. It uses two high-density 8-port connectors, and each port runs asynchronous at up to 230.4 kbps. It does not support synchronous or bisync operation or network clock synchronization, and lead manipulation is supported.
Cables for the 8-port connectors are CAB-HD8-ASYNC (8-port EIA-232, 10 ft or 3 m, RJ-45 connectors) and CAB-HD8-KIT (8-port EIA-232 with eight CAB-25AS-MMOD adapters, 10 ft or 3 m, DB-25 plug). CAB-25AS-MMOD adapts RJ-45 to a DB-25 plug and CAB-25AS-FDTE adapts RJ-45 to a DB-25 socket.
The card is supported on Cisco 2800, 2900, 3800 and 3900 Series routers, and it is not supported on the Cisco 1841 or 1941. It is a single-wide HWIC with no slot restrictions, measuring 0.8 x 3.1 x 5.6 in (2.1 x 7.9 x 14.2 cm). Minimum software is Cisco IOS Release 12.3(14)T on the 2800 and 3800 Series and 15.0(1)M on the 2900 Series and 3925 and 3945 ISRs, with 15.1(1)T on the 3925E and 3945E.
