GLC-BX40-U-I is a Cisco 1000BASE-BX40-U small form-factor pluggable module for 40 km single-fiber bidirectional links. It is the upstream end of a pair: it transmits in the 1260 to 1360 nm range (nominal 1310 nm) and receives in the 1480 to 1600 nm range, so it is paired with a GLC-BX40-D-I or GLC-BX40-DA-I at the far end, which transmits at 1540 to 1560 nm.
Both directions travel over one strand of standard G.652 single-mode fiber, up to 40,000 m (131,234 ft). Transmit power is -5 to +3 dBm and receive power is -25 to +3 dBm, with a maximum channel insertion loss of 19 dB. The module supports SFF-8472 digital optical monitoring, and SFP ports use LC-type connectors.
The trailing I in the part number indicates the industrial temperature version, which operates from -40 to 85 C (-40 to 185 F). That range suits outdoor cabinets, rugged switches and other installations outside climate-controlled rooms.
Related single-fiber and Fast Ethernet optics are in Cisco interface cards and transceivers, such as the GLC-FE-100LX 100BASE-LX10 SFP and the GLC-GE-100FX 100BASE-FX SFP.
